Godly Men Mentoring Boys Starts with Authentic Faith
KOZ has never been about simply taking boys fishing, hunting, camping, or hiking. Those adventures are important because they create opportunities for something much greater. They create space for relationships, and more importantly, they create moments where boys can observe what it looks like for a man to genuinely follow Jesus. Boys notice how leaders speak, treat others, handle challenges, pray, encourage, and serve. Those moments often teach more than words ever could.
As Paul writes in 1 Thessalonians 1, our work should be produced by faith, our labor motivated by love, and our endurance inspired by hope in Jesus Christ. That passage perfectly reflects the heart of KOZ leaders across the country. Every month, men faithfully invest in boys not because they have to, but because God has called them to.
Boys Learn More from What They See Than What They Hear
Every boy is searching for an example. Some have fathers who faithfully demonstrate biblical leadership, while others have experienced divorce, abandonment, addiction, or the loss of a parent. Yet regardless of their background, boys naturally look for someone to follow.
TJ shares the story of a young man he began mentoring at eleven years old after the boy lost his father. Years later, now in his twenties, that young man still returns to spend time with the mentor who consistently invested in him.
Why? Because authentic relationships leave lasting impressions.
The activities may have introduced the relationship, but consistent presence built trust. That is one of the greatest opportunities every KOZ leader has. Boys may not remember every lesson around the campfire, but they will remember the man who faithfully showed up.
Your Example Can Outlast a Boy’s Season of Wandering
One of the greatest encouragements for mentors and fathers comes from Proverbs 22:6: “Train up a child in the way he should go, and when he is old he will not depart from it.” This verse does not promise that every boy will make perfect decisions.
Many young men experience seasons of rebellion, poor choices, or spiritual wandering. The world constantly competes for their attention with messages about success, identity, relationships, and masculinity. However, when boys have consistently seen healthy, godly men living out their faith, they often carry those memories with them; even during difficult seasons, many eventually return.
They remember the conversations around the campfire, the hugs, the prayers and they remember the men who believed in them before they believed in themselves. That foundation often becomes the path God uses to draw them back.
The Greatest Gift You Can Give a Boy Is Your Presence
Many men worry they don’t have enough Bible knowledge or leadership experience to mentor boys. Fortunately, boys are not looking for perfection, they are looking for consistency. They need men who laugh with them, teach them practical skills, spend time outdoors, admit mistakes, love Jesus openly, and remain present through every season.
Your faith becomes believable when they consistently see it lived out. That’s why KOZ emphasizes relationships over programs. Adventures may attract boys, but authentic mentorship transforms them.
Godly Men Mentoring Boys Changes Generations
Healthy masculinity is not taught through lectures alone, it is demonstrated. Every time a leader chooses to spend a Saturday with boys instead of staying home, he gives them another picture of what servant leadership looks like. Every encouraging conversation plants another seed, every prayer builds another layer of faith and every outdoor adventure creates another opportunity for discipleship.
Many boys will eventually become husbands, fathers, church leaders, and mentors themselves. The example they witnessed today may influence families and communities for generations to come. That is the lasting impact of godly men mentoring boys.
