When people hear about Kids Outdoor Zone, many assume we are only a ministry for fatherless boys. While serving unfathered boys is a major part of our mission, that assumption misses something important.
KOZ is also a place where fathers and sons can grow together, serve together, and become part of the solution for boys who are missing a positive male influence in their lives. In this week’s KOZ Raw, TJ challenges leaders, fathers, and churches to understand the unique role a fathers and sons can play in transforming the lives of boys who need godly examples the most.
Why Fathers and Sons Matter in KOZ
One of the most powerful things that can happen in a KOZ group is for an unfathered boy to spend time around healthy fathers and sons. Many boys growing up without a father have never witnessed what a loving father-son relationship looks like. They may have experienced broken promises, absence, disappointment, or abandonment. As a result, their understanding of fatherhood is often shaped by hurt rather than hope.
When a boy sits around a campfire and watches a father encourage his son, correct him with patience, laugh with him, and spend time with him, something begins to change. He starts to see that fathers can be present.
Over time, he begins to understand that fathers can be trustworthy and that the relationship he longs for is not only possible, but real. As a result, those moments create a foundation that helps boys better understand the love of their Heavenly Father.
Fathers and Sons Create Opportunities for Discipleship
There are few opportunities in life where fathers and sons can serve side by side in meaningful ministry. KOZ gives families that opportunity.
As fathers and sons mentor boys together, important conversations naturally follow. A father can talk with his son about compassion, leadership, responsibility, and the challenges some boys face at home. Sons learn that ministry is not something reserved for adults. They discover they can make a difference in another boy’s life right now.
At the same time, fathers model servant leadership for their own sons. That kind of discipleship leaves a lasting impact on both generations.
Fathers Are an Underutilized Mentoring Resource
TJ makes a compelling observation in this week’s message: fathers may be one of the most underutilized mentoring resources available today.
Many dads are busy providing for their families, managing careers, and raising their own children. Yet fathers possess something many boys desperately need.. consistent presence. Every father already has access to boys who may benefit from mentorship. They are the friends on the baseball team, the boys down the street, and the classmates sitting next to your son at school. A simple invitation to attend a KOZ outing can open the door to life-changing relationships.
Sometimes the most effective mentor is not a professional counselor or a church staff member. Sometimes it is simply the dad who shows up consistently and takes an interest in a boy’s life.
Be the Dad on the Block
Every neighborhood seems to have that one adult who all the kids naturally gravitate toward. Maybe he’s teaching boys how to fish, showing them how to work with tools, helping them build something, repair something, or learning a new skill. Whatever the activity may be, boys are drawn to men who invest time in them.
Many KOZ leaders have become that trusted father figure in their communities. They gather boys for monthly adventures, but the mentoring doesn’t stop there. Instead, many leaders invite boys into everyday life. Through practical skills, guidance, and everyday conversations, they create opportunities that might never happen otherwise. Those ordinary moments often become the most transformative.
Don’t Become a Fathers and Sons Ministry Only
While fathers and sons are welcomed and celebrated in KOZ, TJ also offers an important reminder. The goal is not to become a ministry that serves only boys who already have engaged fathers. The mission of KOZ has always been to seek out boys who need mentors, role models, and godly men in their lives.
It is easy to focus on the families already connected to the church. Yet some of the boys who need us most are living right down the street. They may never walk through the church doors unless someone intentionally invites them. That is why KOZ leaders are challenged to look beyond convenience and pursue the boys who are often overlooked.
The mission remains the same: go find the boys who need men.
Bringing Unfathered Boys Into the Story
Fatherhood is one of God’s greatest gifts and responsibilities.
Healthy fathers play a critical role in shaping the next generation. Their example helps boys understand love, discipline, encouragement, responsibility, and faith. When fathers bring unfathered boys into their world, they create opportunities for healing that reach far beyond a Saturday morning activity.
An unfathered boy who experiences a positive father figure gains something invaluable: a picture of what a father can be. That example helps prepare his heart to understand the love and faithfulness of God the Father.
At KOZ, we honor fathers. We celebrate fathers and sons serving together. At the same time, we remain committed to reaching the boys who need those examples the most. Somewhere in your neighborhood right now is a boy who needs a man to show up and sometimes that simple act of showing up can change the trajectory of a life forever.
