Mentoring fatherless boys is not just about how long you get, it’s also about what you do with the moments you’re given. At Kids Outdoor Zone, we’ve learned that even one conversation, one fishing trip, or one quiet moment of presence can change a boy’s eternity. This KOZ Raw story is a reminder of why standing in the gap matters, even when the season is short.
There’s a prayer that I pray before doing each KOZ Raw message. A simple one: “God, what do You want to say to the guys?” Sometimes the message comes easily, sometimes it doesn’t. And sometimes, like this one, it comes wrapped in a story that reminds us why Kids Outdoor Zone exists in the first place.
This is a story about a boy named Angelo. And it’s a reminder for every mentor, every leader, and every man standing in the gap: we may not get much time, but we always get a moment.
How KOZ Began: One Small Invitation
Long before KOZ became what you know today, it started small. A simple magazine ad and a quiet invitation. “Get your boys involved in outdoor adventure.”
Back then, KOZ wasn’t polished or structured. It was just a few men trying to rally boys together for hunting, fishing, and time outdoors. God was still knitting the story together.
One day, a single mom called. She had seven or eight kids and was exhausted. Her oldest boy, Angelo, needed a man in his life; someone to speak into him, guide him, steady him. She had been praying for help, then she saw the ad. To her, it felt like an answer.
When a Boy Carries More Than He Should
Angelo started coming along on monthly trips. He fit in, he showed up and he tried.
Then one day, on a drive to the gun range, he asked for a private conversation. “Mr. TJ… I think my mom’s a prostitute.”
No manual prepares you for that moment. A boy trying to make sense of adult brokenness. A heart carrying things no child should carry. There were no perfect words; just presence, prayer, and a reminder that he wasn’t alone. And that’s often all God asks of us.
The Moment That Changed Everything
A few trips later, the group went fishing. The leaders were laughing on a hill, watching from a distance, and then came a nudge from God: “What are you doing?”
Down by the pond, Angelo stood alone under a tree with his fishing line tangled in the branches.
That moment mattered. I walked down, untangled the line, cast it back out, and sat beside him on the bank. Not a sermon. Not a program. Just time. And there, by a quiet pond, Angelo asked Jesus into his heart. Welcome to the family, little buddy.
When Boys Disappear—and the Work Still Counts
Angelo didn’t stay. Life shifted. His family moved. Voices around him changed. Survival took over and eventually, he stopped coming altogether.
And that’s the hard truth of mentoring fatherless boys:
- Sometimes you get one visit
- Sometimes six months
- Sometimes a year
- And sometimes… just one moment
But here’s what we know: That moment counts forever. Angelo knows Jesus. And one day, whether on this side of heaven or the next, there will be a reunion. This is the heart of mentoring fatherless boys, showing up faithfully, even when you don’t know how long the road will be.
Why KOZ Works the Way It Does
KOZ isn’t corporate. It isn’t scripted. It isn’t rushed. It’s beautifully rugged.
The gospel gets shared:
- On walks through the woods
- On drives to the range
- On the side of a pond
- Around a campfire
Exactly the way Jesus modeled ministry—life on life, moment by moment. That’s why what you do matters.
A Charge to KOZ Men and Leaders
Don’t miss the chance. You don’t have to force it. You don’t have to manufacture it. God brings the boys.
But when the moment shows up—be ready. Stay strong. Stay in it.
This year is bringing big things, but the mission stays the same.
If you need support:
- Jump on the monthly HTL Zoom calls
- Call the office
- Share your stories—we want to hear them
You’re not alone in this work.
We love you.
God bless you.
Regulators. Mount up.

For every man called to mentoring fatherless boys, the charge is simple: don’t miss the moment God puts in front of you.
