When I was younger, I thought I knew what my later years would look like. I imagined a rocking chair on a porch somewhere, taking life easy and watching from the sidelines while younger men carried the load. What I’ve discovered instead is that God isn’t finished with me yet.
At 67 years old, I’m more convinced than ever that some of the most important work we do happens in the second half of life. That is why older men are one of the greatest untapped resources in the Church today.
The Wisdom Younger Men Need
Every older man carries something valuable. Years of experience, lessons learned through marriage, the ups and downs of raising children, the pain of loss, the victories and failures that come with following Jesus over a lifetime. Younger men desperately need access to that wisdom and many of them don’t even realize what they’re missing.
Some don’t know how to navigate a difficult marriage, others struggle to lead their family well, many are facing challenges at work, struggling with parenting, or trying to figure out what faith looks like in real life. The answers they’re searching for often aren’t found in a book or a podcast. They’re found sitting across a table from a man who has already walked that road.
Mentorship has always been God’s design. One generation helping the next, older men investing in younger men. Men sharing not just knowledge, but experience, strength, and hope.
Don’t Retire From Your Calling
Our culture celebrates retirement. Work hard. Save money. Step away. Take it easy. There is nothing wrong with slowing down from a career, but there is something wrong with stepping away from your calling.
The Kingdom of God doesn’t have a retirement age. Some of the most influential people in a young man’s life are men in their 50s, 60s, 70s, and beyond. You don’t need a title or a seminary degree. You don’t need to be a great speaker, you just simply need to be present.
Sometimes the most powerful thing an older man can offer is his availability by showing up, listening, sharing stories and being a steady example of faithfulness. The next generation doesn’t need perfect men, what they need is present men.
Why Multi-Generational Ministry Matters
One of the things I love most about Kids Outdoor Zone is that it brings generations together. Where else do you see boys, teenagers, young fathers, grandfathers, and great-grandfathers gathered around the same campfire?
In a typical KOZ group, you’ll find men in every season of life learning from one another. A young boy may not fully understand a lesson about trust, integrity, or perseverance the first time he hears it, but he watches. He observes how older men treat people, notices how they handle disappointment and learns what respect looks like. He sees what it means to follow Jesus over the long haul and that kind of influence cannot be measured.
It happens through conversations on a fishing trip, around a campfire, during a hunting adventure, or while working together on a simple project. Those moments shape lives.
Father’s Day Is the Perfect Opportunity
As we celebrate Father’s Day this month, consider inviting older men to share their stories. Ask them about their fathers, the lessons they’ve learned, the mistakes they made and how God carried them through difficult seasons.
Our boys need to hear those stories and many boys today are growing up without consistent male role models. Others have fathers in their lives but still need additional men speaking truth and encouragement into them. A senior man’s story can provide perspective, hope, and wisdom that lasts a lifetime.
Don’t Stop When You’re Tired. Stop When You’re Done.
If you’re in your 50s, 60s, 70s, or beyond, hear this clearly: Don’t stop when you’re tired. Stop when you’re done.
As long as God has given you breath, there is still Kingdom work to do. Your story matters, the experiences you’ve gained matter and most importantly, your wisdom matters. The younger generation needs what God has taught you. Don’t assume your most impactful years are behind you, because they just might be happening right now.
If God has given you another day, another year, or another decade, there’s still work to do. Keep showing up, keep investing and keep sharing your story. Don’t stop when you’re tired. Stop when you’re done. The Kingdom needs seasoned men who are willing to pass the torch to those coming behind them, and there are boys and younger men waiting for someone like you to step into their lives.
