Seasons Come – Seasons Go and Satan is Mayhem

My friends up north and on the east coast make fun of us in Texas because our seasons don’t have real big differences in temperatures or a fall leaves color change. I can agree with them to a point. Deal is cactus and mesquite just don’t bloom and change like the aspen and maples do. If you moved here with tire chains and ice fishing gear it is just going to take up space in your garage.

My buddy Lynn in Utah told me recently something I had never considered. He said when his wife moved to the Sundance, Utah area from Texas he told her one day, “You better go get anything out of the yard you don’t want to disappear till spring.” She laughed and told him she would get to it. He replied, “No, really, after tomorrow it will all be gone till Spring.” The next day it began to snow and everything was covered in white till the spring. He told me, “The seasons prompt you to do things that folks who don’t know seasons don’t understand.” When folks up north know the weather is changing they prepare for it, they have too. They are motivated to get certain things done.

Seasons of life are real, they come and create change. Life seasons include a lot of different elements. Take friendships, you can be really close to a person for a period of time and then you drift apart. It doesn’t seem like it could ever happen but then it does. A season of joy can be replaced by hardships and struggles. The death of a parent can be replaced by a child’s birth. A job you could never image ending does and another comes along. We get older and hopefully wiser. The things we did in our teens and twenties we would never consider today. Things we could do physically just a few years ago begin to be harder.

Like the weather life can be brutal at times. Snow over the doors, Spring rain that won’t stop, temperatures over 100 for weeks and weeks. Ugh. A sick parent or family member becomes a season. Marriage struggles and kid problems can drain our energies and crush our spirits for a season. I had a friend tell me once tell me he did not believe in seasons of life. He was young and strong willed. He will look back and see that he experienced them, good and bad.

As men we need to be strong in walking through the seasons of life. That does not mean be hard shelled, unemotional, unavailable. We are the examples to our families and the KOZ boys we are entrusted with. One of the most incredible influencers on those around us can be when we are vulnerable during seasons of hardship and joy.

Planning is also our responsibility. When you know you need to mow the lawn, fix the tire on the car you don’t put it off until it turns to a disaster do you? Of course those things tend to be easier for us as guys than say making amends to someone or planning marriage counselling.

I have seen many a man taken out in the middle of their best seasons. They are coming to the men’s group, going to church, beginning to hear the calling of the Holy Spirit on their lives and then they slowly quit participating. They missed one night at men’s group, then another. Church became less of a priority. Sin crept in in some area, alcohol, over working, porn. I don’t always know the details. They were not prepared for the winter. They had heard a hundred times to get the stuff up that needs to get up before the first snow. When things get hard satan says fall back, go to your old relief stations and God does not care about you or this would not be happening. Then he (satan) charges in. He is mayhem, know that.

Brothers, as the cool air of fall begins to come be readying for the winter. Teach your KOZ boys that hardships come and go but Jesus is forever. He is the one constant. Be bold in your rescue mission for your heart, your family, your KOZ boys. Rally together, check on each other, care for each other.

Psalm 40:1-17, To the choirmaster. A Psalm of David. I waited patiently for the Lord; he inclined to me and heard my cry. He drew me up from the pit of destruction, out of the miry bog, and set my feet upon a rock, making my steps secure. He put a new song in my mouth, a song of praise to our God. Many will see and fear, and put their trust in the Lord. Blessed is the man who makes the Lord his trust, who does not turn to the proud, to those who go astray after a lie! You have multiplied, O Lord my God, your wondrous deeds and your thoughts toward us; none can compare with you! I will proclaim and tell of them, yet they are more than can be told.

Yes Texas does not have the seasons you guys in the north and east may experience but we do have 4 months of dove hunting, almost 5 months of deer season. Months and months of ducks of every flavor. Squirrel and rabbit are all the time. Then there are those dang hogs we wack every day. Ugh. Brutal. Add in some great fishing on the coast, best bass fishing on the planet, well that is how we know what season it is here. We are okay with that. God bless.
